Scuba divers have a unique perspective of the underwater world, and see firsthand the crisis facing our underwater environments. In 1989, PADI developed the AWARE philosophy - Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education - to stress divers’ roles in conserving these environments and create a group of effective environmental advocates. “We want to feel that our children, their children and generations to come will be able to enjoy the underwater world that has given us so much. There are so many significant problems facing mankind, but as divers, this is truly our cause. If divers do not take an active role in preserving the aquatic realm, who will?”
Mermaids Dive Center is a Go Eco Center committed to keeping Pattaya’s underwater realm and beaches in pristine condition for our local and international divers and snorkelers. Each month we dedicate a day to collect trash from the reefs and beaches of a Pattaya island. Our cleans ups are very successful and all divers and snorkelers that take part in this worthwhile project claim a sense of achievement at the end of the day for taking part and making their difference. Results of the clean up are submitted to Project AWARE for monitoring.
International Clean up Day 19th September 2009
Project AWARE’s longstanding International Cleanup Day event is the biggest underwater cleanup of its kind. Held annually on the 3rd Saturday in September each year, more than 370,000 volunteers clean over 33,000 miles of shoreline to remove seven million pounds of rubbish.
Project AWARE partners with dedicated scuba divers, clean the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers and shorelines. These volunteers take part in practical cleanup solutions and collect data that is vital to addressing global debris issues. Cleanup and data collection activities are supported by Project AWARE Foundation, partners and volunteers on an ongoing basis to reform, inform, educate and legislate.
In 2008, Mermaids Dive Center had a record 176 people taking part and donated 156,000 baht to Project AWARE.
