November Koh Chang Dive Weekend
It’s that time of year again! The weather has returned to ideal conditions to dive the iconic ship wreck, the HTMS Chang. Twice a year, here at Mermaids Dive Center we host a trip down to the beautiful island of Koh Chang. Koh Chang is a large island of the coast of Trat province, closer to the South Eastern boarder of Thailand.
The HTMS Chang, formerly know as USS Linclon, is a massive tank landing craft. After being used by the US Navy in WWII and the Korean War, the ship was decommissioned and sold to the Royal Thai Navy in 1962. After nearly 50 years of service, in November 2012 the Thai Navy intentionally sunk it four miles of the coast of Koh Chang. Not only as a new dive destination, but also as a marine conservation effort. She is 100 meters in length, the crow’s nest at roughly 25 meters high and rests in roughly 30m of water. It is a wreck junkies paradise because of her large cargo hold, 3 main decks, 7 sub decks, and abundance of marine life.
Divers met at the shop and we travelled down to the pier for the crossing. We arrived at the hotel for a relaxing evening of food and beer at a seafront bar/restaurant. Those who were travelling down after work arrived at about 8pm (it can be done)
After breakfast, we boarded the boat and has amazing calm, flat seas which gave us great vizability on our first dive. We saw tons of fish, Batfish, Barracuda and large Groupers. The mooring line has now been moved to center midship which is better as avoids damage to the tower where it previously was.
After surface intervals, we headed back in the water and again were the only ground on the wreck for the next 2 dives. Once finished for the day, back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner at the local Greek Restaurant which has an excellent setting, good food, Red Wine and of course we had the most excellent company.
The next day we had another 3 dives. Terry was teaching PADI Advanced Open Water on the wreck and a few groups were penetrating. Again, lots of fish were spotted over the course of the day with the wreck being the focal point.
After another awesome day of diving, we headed back to the pier and back to Pattaya. It’s an awesome weekend. You can leave after work on Friday and join us and you will be back in Pattaya or Bangkok on Sunday evening, ready to get some sleep to be back at work on Monday.
Thanks everyone for joining us and looking forward to our next one in February 2019.
