It’s every divers dream to see at least one whale shark in their lifetime. Our divers were treated to a surprise appearance by one on the Hardeep Wreck in Samaesan. The divers who were already on board after their dive, quickly grabbed their mask, snorkel and fins and jumped in the water to swim with the gentle giant.

Did you know that Whale sharks are the largest fish on the planet? They are filter-feeders and are completely harmless to humans. They can reach lengths of over 40 feet, while feeding on the tiniest of ocean organisms – plankton! Whale sharks are striking in the ocean, not only because of their size but their unique pattern of spots and bars on its body. They belong to the group called Chondryichtyes, which includes sharks, rays, and skates. These fish have skeletons made entirely of cartilage in comparison to other fishes that have skeletons made of bone.

Lets look at the facts! The only known predator of the whale shark is humans. The mouth of the whale shark is massive, reaching a width of approximately 1 meter (over 3 feet). The whale shark can reach a length of 40 feet or more and weighs 20 or more tons. The whale shark can have between 300-350 rows of teeth at one time. Females can have up to 300 shark pups at one time!

Whale sharks can live up 100 years of age if left alone.
