Mermaids International Clean Up The Reef and Beach Day
The last day of our 3 day events supporting #awareweek taking place around the world. We would like to thank all of our participants over the weeks for picking up trash and the 190 who went out this day.
We had our local community battling the elements to help us on this clean up. Our local divers and snorkelers collected trash, as well as ISC Pattaya’s junior cleaners, who had such a great day. Thanks also to a big group from Harrow International School, Bangkok for making the journey down to join us.
The breakfast served in the morning built up energy for everyone and once on the boats we had the Boatmasters briefing everyone on what to do. The snorkelers attacked the beach and the divers collected some serious amounts from underwater.
As this was our 3rd clean up on the island, it was encouraging to see that the trash hadn’t come back in abundance, just proving we really are making our difference out there. Biggest items were polystyrene on deck and glass bottles below. We collected an estimated:-
8th September – 120 participants = 100 kg’s from the beach, 40 kg’s underwater
15th September – 164 participants = 140 kg’s from the beach, 50 kg’s underwater
6th October – 190 participants = 150 kg’s from the beach, 50 kg’s underwater
474 participants collected over 1/2 ton of trash
That’s a big difference to our marine life and the environment and from the team at Mermaids, thank you everyone that took part and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next year when we get to do it all over again.
A massive thanks to the team of Mermaids, without you the clean ups would not be possible.
